We have gotten 3 eggs now ... all small brown eggs. One every second day since last Wednesday. Our hens are a cochin (Esther) and a NOT "silkie ameraucana" (Goldy). Goldy has light bluish spots on the side of her head, where someone might suspect her ears would be (but I'm not very good at chicken anatomy yet - being an extreme novice). Esther doesn't have immediately visible ears, but I know cochins lay brown eggs. However, Goldy is the one who is acting very "eggish" - she's always squatting and spends a lot of time in the roosting house. They have created 2 indentations in the hay for nests, but I can't be sure whose is whose. The eggs are consistently in the same nest, and neither hen will admit ownership.

Can we be certain that Esther is laying the eggs?

p.s. we may be buying two black sex links tonight! one tiny egg every other day is not gonna do it for me!

so, the fact that she has blue ears means nothing? bummer. we were really hoping for blue eggs ... and REALLY hoping for bigger eggs.

is she not even an ameraucana? (now, I see NOT - but now I don't know what she is) i thought they all laid some variation of blue eggs.

if she is not that breed, that really irks us, since we specifically drove to "this" chicken seller and bought 3 hens, who were 3-4 months old - one was a rooster. and now, we won't even get blue eggs out of the deal.

we have refrained thus far to name this breeder, who is quite prolific on craigslist and even supplies some for our neighborhood feed store, but every day makes us more irked, to say the least.

Don't know about the green egg thing (does she have green legs)...my aracauna that lays green eggs does and that's what I was told was one way to tell. Also...if she's a new layer her eggs will get bigger....the first ones just start out small and she'll work her way up in size.

Yeah, EE don't necessarily lay green/blue eggs.

I only have 1 of 3 that lay green eggs and they all hatched from green eggs, because I hatched them in my bator. She does have green legs too. Go with your instincts, if you think its the silky you are probably right.

Well, I am now positive it's the EE ... after watching her on the nest yesterday.

I'm so sad that she won't be laying blue eggs. But, at least she's prolific! She laid 4 eggs in 6 days. *small* but they had bright orange-yellow yolks. We had eggs for dinner last night. 4 small eggs + 2 regular eggs were barely enough for the 2 kids, though.

Silkies will have the turquoise or bluish spots you mention. If she has any silkie blood, she will probably lay well and they make great little pets. They also set very, very well, so watch for her to go broody after sometimes just a few eggs. That can be frustrating soemtimes when you want more eggs but great when you want nature's best natural incubator!
