I have 3 one year old hens on layer feed and 3 ten week old chicks on starter feed. They have integrated pretty well and I'm debating taking down the chicken wire barrier in the enclosed run. Mostly because occasionally the older hens go in the chick area and then can't get back out. The chicks can come and go from their little area and sleep with the older hens in the coop.
My question is that once the barrier is down they will all want to eat out of each others feeders, they already do some. I want to be sure the older hens get their layer feed, but if they eat starter feed will that interfere with egg production. And will it be bad for the chicks to not eat only starter feed?
So which is more important: The chicks getting starter feed or the hens getting layer feed?
Thanks!

I think it is most important for the chicks to not eat the layer feed because of the high calcium.

Switch them all to the chicks feed till the chicks start to lay themselves. Give the hens a calcium supplement like oyster shell in a separate dish. The layer does have too much calcium for the chicks, and the layer's only difference is the calcium.
