Which is safer?

I recently had to move my 4 roosters to the country. I spent a week making a house and then making it predator proof. I went to eat supper and when I came back to lock the roosters down for the night, they were up in a tree!(They would prior to this get into their original cage as sun when down) I couldn't coax them down, so I left them. The next morning, it took me a while to coax the head rooster down. I considered getting an extension ladder as they seemed like they didn't know what to do but eventually Daffy took the brave first step. My question is this: Is it safer to allow them the freedom of roosting in trees at night or should I devise a plan as to getting them into the chicken house to lock them down? They still seem unsure about getting down from the trees.

I have the same problem with my hens. I have to get a ladder out most nights and bring them in the coop. Last year I let them stay in the trees and had no problems with varmits. This year was another story. When I let them roost in the trees I lost two hens to a racoon and another hen to an owl. So, my advice is to not chance it and take them in at night.

Great:rolleyes:How do I get them in without resorting to a ladder?? Do you think if I kept their food away until dusk, they might come in on their own then??

Sometimes that works for me and sometimes not. It depends on how much they have been able to forage during the day and whether they are hungry. Now during the summer when there is lots of grass and plenty of bugs, mine won't come down for feed. I have to resort to the ladder 90% of the time.
