We have six 13 week old khaki Campbell ducks and I now know that 3 are ducks and 3 are drakes. We don't have space to get more females so I am only able to keep one drake. I don't know drake personalities yet and so I need help figuring out which one I should keep for my females.
Suitor # 1: he is the biggest and bossiest! He keeps a good watch on what is going on while the others are eating, bathing, etc. I noticed last night as I was putting them in for the night that the females followed him and those 4 went into the duck house while the 2 remaining drakes looked in longingly. He has started to chase away the smallest drake, runs towards him with his head down, so I am worried he may get aggressive. Also, yesterday I noticed that he was beside a female and held her head down on the ground for about 5 seconds....he wasn't on top of her but beside her.
Suitor #2: he basically follows suitor #1 but the females do not follow him around like the first one and I haven't seen him show any signs of aggression.
Suitor #3: I only recently realized that he is a he. He seems to be a slight outcast and is very quiet, smaller than the other two and doesn't make a fuss.
Obviously, I don't want an aggressive drake but I would like one that takes care of the females. This is my first go round with ducks so any help would be awesome!
Also, how long do I have before I need to make a decision? Give them more time and what are the things to look for in a goo male?
