Which nest box would be better? A hooded cat litter tray or a plastic box with a hole in? It seems the latter is a much cheaper solution or should I invest?

Awesome! I was looking at buckets but after looking at some threads here it seemed many said their hens didn’t like them
I haven't noted an issue with them avoiding them, apart from one or two hens that lay in the duck egg pile. Brats. I need to build floor boxes so they stop getting dirty.

Lol. Thanks for sharing your bucket nests. I think it’s likely between buckets and plastic boxes, whichever is cheaper, as both can easily be replaced

I will have to take a picture tonight but I use the tidy cat plastic boxes laid on their side cut the flap off the lid and the top cut off for extra height.

I like the idea of a plastic liner. I have wooden nest boxes, and it has been a bear to keep clean when a chicken breaks her own eggs before I can get to them. I'm going to measure the interior tomorrow and start searching for a plastic tray or box that can fit.
