Which nest box would be better? A hooded cat litter tray or a plastic box with a hole in? It seems the latter is a much cheaper solution or should I invest?

I see no reason why #1 wouldn't work. I use 5gal buckets on their side in a frame.

I will have to take a picture tonight but I use the tidy cat plastic boxes laid on their side cut the flap off the lid and the top cut off for extra height.
