Which part of the chicken business is most profitable?

I believe the cheaper the cost to feed them the more "profit" you can make. Chickens alone are not a way to make a living. Chickens, pigs, ducks, veggies. It takes a combination of things to make a good living on livestock. Cattle seems to be the only single living maker. Location is also a big thing. Here in Va. I can sell 20,000 birds befor license is needed. But I can only sell in Va. Some states you have to be usda inspected, here I could label my product "exempt P.L 90-492" or you can pay the butcher down the road usda certified to package. But that gets costly. Egg sales cover feed(if you use it) and maybe extra if selling enough. I do a compost feed and mix oats 10$ 50lbs in store. Craigslist can sometimes turn up some farmers with homemade scratch and feed if you wanna buy in bulk. Some ppl rag on me for doing a compost feed claiming they arent getting enough but I haven't had any issues. Good luck I hope you succeed

And the only time you need to cut corners is if you are a corporation claiming to be bigger then you really are and have to force feed birds to get them to weight asap. When you care for your animals and your customers see it you wont need to cut corners because even if you run out of stock 90% of them will put in a order and wait for the simple fact you dont cut corners and your birds and eggs are the freshest and tastiest. Oh and dont jip yourself when choosing a price point. You put in the work you care for those birds and feed them. Dont be scared to ask for 4-5$ a dozen or 5$ a lbs. It cost money to raise these birds Nd your real customers will realize that. If you start cheap just to get customers to notice you then they are going to leave as soon as you raise your prices. Start high and stay consistent

A friend of mine, a well known local hobby breeder, was telling me the other day that the reason he has cut back on chicks, growers and POL this year is because he has found the most money comes from selling fertile eggs from his rare breeds. He only has three small breeding groups and each group is doing £100 a month in sales. Ok, never going to quit the day job on that but it’s alright as a little top-up income from a hobby.
