sent an email question to website owner but haven't heard back

We have eight adult laying hens, and a rat problem with our open-rim hanging feeder

Trying to understand the options for the rat-proof feeder

Is medium the right size for 8 hens?

I don't remember getting any emails, was it the CRM system on the shopping cart? If so, check your spam, many business emails wind up there.

Eight hens, two pounds of feed needed per day, a medium should feed eight birds for two weeks. Plenty of space to eat two to three at a time.

Soft close help quiet the sound the feeder makes and makes the feeder safer in some manner but if you follow the directions, i.e., don't hang it on a wall and expect it to work, you will do fine with the regular feeder. Block off access from the side with something like milk jugs filled with dirt or sand, force them to come in from the front in case one is trying to eat from the side.

Nothing is 100% safe, we have a saying in Oklahoma, no farm animal is 100% safe around moving machinery or Oklahoma State Senators. Follow the instructions and the hens will do fine.
