We bought 16 hens this spring, 2 turned out to be roosters. I didn't really want roosters but thought I would keep them. One is huge, quiet and shy. The other is very aggressive, smaller and seems to start alot of fights with the hens as well as the other rooster. The larger rooster just started crowing yesterday

(It almost felt like a child of mine just started walking, I was so proud). The smaller rooster seems really bothered by this and has started attacking the larger rooster. He will also attack our feet when we enter the run. My thinking is he has to go. DH has already named him Gravy. What should we do with him? I used to butcher chickens when I was a kid, but I don't think I can do that anymore. If I was to give him away, who would want a rooster that is mean and aggressive? Dh wants to butcher him, since that is why we got the breed we did, they are layers and large enough to eat.

What would you do?

You could give him away, however, I wouldnt do it unless someone took him, knowing he was aggressive. If you dont feel right about that, I'd cull him yourself or find someone else who would. Put him free on Craigslist or Freecycle. Someone who does process their own birds may want him for their dinner. I sure wouldnt keep him if you have your better alternative, i.e. the other rooster. With 14 hens, you can get by with one rooster.

we just got rid of a agressive Roo. on craigslist. I told the person who got him he was very protective of his girls. then we let him get 2 of our hens that knew the Roo. he wanted them to put on a 120 acre farm and for the kids (3 N 12) to learn a little about farm animals. I haven't heard from him since so I hope all is well.
