which type of hens?

I haven't gotten my hens as of yet. I was looking at Brahma's and Orpinton's , can anybody shed some light on these breeds. a friends suggested getting golden comets, but the little research i could find on them i was looking for something with some personality. not just an egg factory. do the Brahma's and Orpintons get along?.

I have a light brahma and she is a sweetie. She growls and is too cute. I have two BOs and they get along with everyone in their flock of 21 mixed breeds. One is very sweet and the other is easily handled and petted but not the "come jump in your lap" type.

They are both heavy breeds and lay brown eggs. I love all three of them too pieces. they should be fine together.

If you want heavy layers go with the comets or other hybrids. If you want personality and eggs, go with the BOs and brahmas. You might consider dominiques too. I heard such great things about them and ordered one and she is a doll...wish I had ordered more. EEs are really great, very sweet loving chickens and lay a nice green egg.

Australorps are great too. I have 8 of them. Good layers and friendly. New Hampshire Reds lay a large/x-L brown egg and mine is a friendly sweet girl.

Our BO Brunhilde quickly became top hen when we introduced her to our already structured flock. She was so big she just had to walk into the coop and declare herself empress! She was a good girl.

I can't reccomend Aussies enough. Our curtrent lead hen Olympia is an Aussie and very beautiful and friendly. I also love EEs.

Love my brahmas. Absolutely love them! Can't think of owning another breed, but if I did it would be the BO's. Like Cetawin, the egg-laying was only part of it for me.

I just ran across this post and have to say that I love my BO's. If I get anymore hens, they will definitely be BO's or EE's because they are the sweetest but also leaders. I also have RIR's and BSL's but other than egg production, I haven't been too impressed with them.
