Which way do chickens face on their roost? Help - size of drop pit

I really was just being silly.

I think they always do the "some one way, some the other way", if you think about it, it makes sense on an instinctual level to help watch both directions for predators.

I only have two, and I always have one facing one way, and the other the opposite, so I sure this is a predator defense instinct.

Thanks for all the replies! While it might have been a ridiculous question, I'm glad I asked.

So I think I'm going to modify my plans for the dropping pit. Yeah, I don't want to scrap the idea just yet--those of you with them seem to swear by them. Rather than having the pit stretch over 1/2 the coop, I'm going to set it about 6" either side of the roost (so just over 12" wide total). What do you think, will this catch a majority of the droppings off the roost?

Ours go every which way.

Sometimes they forego the roost all together and sit in the nest box.
