I live out in the country, every predator imaginable is around and I expect some losses but try to minimize it.

They never come this close to the house, I hear them hunting down squirrels, (ever see/hear of hawks hunting in a pack?) seen then fly around and knew of a hawk nest out back deep in the woods.

Then one morning while sitting in the living room this red tail shows up and lands about 8' from me.
The squirrels frequent this 'perch' and it may have gotten one coming to the bird feeders nearby.

I came downstairs yesterday morning to barking dogs - but they wouldn't go outside. In the middle of my yard was a small hawk looking similar to yours. He/she was about 30 yards away from the coop just standing there on the lawn. The chickens had all gone into their covered coop/run area. As soon as I opened the back door, he flew away - then the dogs ran out barking to make sure it was gone (sissies!). I've only seen one in my yard once before, and it was smaller than my chickens. I still treat it as a threat though!

The picture isn't quite big enough to tell but, Is he really reddish orange? If so you may have a kestrel which are only dangerous to small chicks.
