Whiskey barrel filter

I have some old whiskey barrels. We are putting in a new duck pond filter. I would like to use one of the barrels for a filter and one for gutter rain water collections. The question is if the whiskey leaches from the barrel will it harm my ducks or geese? Has anyone tried this?

I don't really understand the concept as I have no experience with whiskey barrels, but alcohol can hurt birds. If there is any alcohol smell or chance that alcohol could get into the water I wouldn't risk it.
