I’m not sure if this is abnormal or not. I noticed that my chickens have what seems like a white discoloration around their beaks and maybe even their combs? It’s almost like what happens when your skin gets dry and “ashy”. Do chickens get dry skin/beaks?
They all seem fine and nothing else has changed. I’m just wondering if I should be concerned about this or not?
Including pictures of all three ladies. It’s not the easiest thing to see so I’m sorry that the pictures aren’t great.
Thank you in advance!

How old?

They look fine to me but I have old eyes.

Mine get that way here....dry. I live where humidity is really really low though.

It gets a bit worse here when mine start their molt.

They are around 5-6 months old. Not laying yet. I live in Texas where it’s pretty humid but today was our first cold weather day. Maybe it was attributed to that? I’m not sure. I’ll be sure to keep an eye on them to see if anything changes. I guess I’m just being a worry wart!

It doesn't matter how old they are. Skin always flakes off wattles and combs, and can make them look more pink than red. If it bothers you, you can do what we do for the show birds to make them look prettier and the combs redder. Put a little food-grade oil, like olive or corn oil, on a paper towel or a cotton swab and dab their comb, wattle and their face. Not too much, just enough to lightly coat the skin with oil. Rub it in very gently so that it gets down into the crinkles. Most birds really like this treatment, by the way.

A light, easily absorbed (and inexpensive) oil, like sunflower oil would also condition their skin. While you're at it, the occasional oiling of their legs and feet would probably be appreciated too.

I know some people use mineral oil, and that's probably okay. But it's easy to remember to use an oil that's edible.

Thank you for the great tip. I don't need anymore to do around here, but I do want our birds to be happy. Which in turn im hoping and praying that will help them to be happy and have a cohesive flock, including our Roo's too!
