I’m hatching eggs that were sold to me as black copper marans. They pipped today and from what I could see of their beaks, most were black in colour. One just hatched tonight and turned out to be an all white/yellow chick. Were the eggs not black copper marans afterall or is it possible for there to be light coloured marans?

Yes, it can happen but it's very rare. I've personally never had it happen but I've read about on here. Contact the breeder and see what they think might have happened.

The legs are not feathered. The white chick is significantly bigger and has thicker legs than the maran chicks. The breeder said the only other possibility is red sex link but I didn’t realize they laid dark brown eggs as well. All the eggs that hatched were basically the same colour.

Ive always found that the thicker legged chicks are roos.

Could be a Splash Marans chick- a few of mine were pure white at hatching. If the breeding pen had Black and Blue Marans- it's totally possible for two Blues to spin off a Splash!
