Hello! So yesterday I picked up my first chickens! The lady said that this was a cochin... Do they normally have white earlobes or is she a mix of something else?
Her comb got frost bite and froze off.
Thanks you!
Probably not 100% pure. The comb might be a pea comb instead of a damaged single comb because she has a fairly prominent dewlap, and a lot of pea combed breeds have those. Wattle's smallish, too.
Red earlobes do fade a bit with age.
Can you handle her? If so, you could check if there is a small strip of thickened skin [looks like a scar or seam, and might be featherless] below her breast, on her keel bone. It's an easy way of checking for pea comb genetics, as the traits are linked.
Does she have the strip of thicker skin, too?
Makes me wonder if she is a Brahma mix, rather than Cochin. Brahmas do not have white earlobes, but they do have pea combs [and feathered legs].
looks like rose comb, maybe walnut comb to me. Perhaps a picture of the comb from the front instead of the side? If walnut, possibly several generations down from silkie-cochin cross. Silkies would pass down either/both rose and pea and also the white earlobes.
I'm thinking either pea or walnut, because of the signs of pea comb genetics. There are a few rose combed breeds with white earlobes, so maybe one of those was involved+a brahma. I think there is definitely some actual Cochin in there too, though.
Agree cochin type is strong in this one. Not really seeing pea influence on her wattles- they often look different on pea combed birds, her's don't really have that look other than being small. That is why I asked about seeing a frontal or top view.
My first thought was Wyandotte- cochin mix with that being a rose comb and would fit nice with her curved back and high rise tail from the wyandotte side. Then wondered about the white lobes. threw in suggestion about silkie as silkies have rose comb gene and also pea and also cochin and silkies are very commonly found in same flocks.
