Hi I am in the uk and looking for a docile white egg layer. So far I think the California grey seems like a good option but I don’t think I can get them here?
leghorns seem a bit flighty and may escape my free range area- two acres of orchard fenced in but no roof.
anyone know if I can get the grays here or of another white egg layer i can get in the uk that is docile.

I am in the UK too. My silkies and polish lay white eggs. They are both friendly. I think the docile nature in any breed is best fostered by you raising the chicks from tiny, so they are human friendly

If you have 2 acres with trees, foraging, shade, sun, dirt for bathing, enough food and water, then no chicken is going to want or need to escape it! That is like chicken Disney land.

I wouldn't worry about flighty breeds for that reason.

You won't be able to get your hands on California whites.
I would look at Lakenvelder and Brabanter. You just can't beat Leghorns for long lived production. They are slightly but that's what makes them long lived.

That’s what I would hope but I have a friend who has a great set up for her hens but the leghorn often hops over the fence for a wander. It’s a worry for me as I have dogs that wouldn’t be friendly to my precious girls.

there are so many breeds to choose from, but each chicken will have its own personality too. I have a Houdini Frizzle Polish who seems able to fly when she shouldn't be able to, and has an escaping addiction!

But in her case, the grass really IS greener on the other side of the fence, lol!

Hi
Yes I love to get my chicks used to me and hadn’t thought about those breeds thank you

Hi
Thank you I’ll take a look at those.
I am tempted by the leghorns I hear such good things about their feed to production ratio etc and will keep thinking about getting one of two of those. Hopefully as all my others stay in the orchard they will too 🤞🏻
