i found a clutch of eggs today, obviously laid by 6 different chickens because they were all slightly warm still. When I collected them I noticed a couple had a white film on them. Is this normal?! The eggs seem perfectly fine otherwise. Any ideas what this could be? Also, I tried to wash it off and it just came back.

I believe that’s the bloom.

It's bloom....a protective coating put on the eggs by the hen's body. Sometimes it's more noticeable than others
Thank you! I kind of thought that’s what it was, but didn’t understand why it was so prominent on some of the eggs and not others. I’m glad it’s not something wrong with their diet!

It also has the advantage of helping keep bacteria from migrating into the eggs. So if you don't wash your eggs it's okay to store them at room temperature for quite a while.

We wash any eggs with a little poop on them and store those in the fridge. But otherwise they just sit on our kitchen table. They're so pretty!
