I have a broody girl that I am thinking about allowing to sit on a clutch of eggs, but curious what I might get. Any thoughts on what this silkie is likely mixed with? She has the black skin and extra toes - but a lot more feathers than fluff. She's been laying an egg a day. they are fairly small and cream colored. She is six months old and about the same size as the roo next to her who is the same age (but looks more like a silkie IMO). Thanks!

Is there a standard breed they mix the hatchery quality silkies with? They are obviously not pure breed. Of course, my "least pretty" one is the broody one. lol
She is just about six months and went broody almost immediately after starting to lay. She hasn't been bad and seems to actually be coming out of it. It's COLD here in NJ, so I was not inclined to let her hatch any just yet. The roo is a very handsome buff silkie with the black tail feathers.

They aren't mixing them. Just most likely no selective breeding going on. They generally pick ones that will lay more eggs versus looking pretty. I think the average lay rate is closer to 3 eggs a week versus 5-6 that I have seen from hatchery chicks.

Really they look for something with the feathers. Since you need 2 copies to produce the silkie feathers. I don’t think over all appearances matter. If the did cross a silkie to a smooth feathered bird the offspring would just have smooth feathers.
