White Laced Red Cornish Question

I'm curious how they would mix with backyard breeds and if they are hardy to survive northern winters...

Mine do well with a big outdoor run and a large indoor area and they are mixed with layers and a few odd crosses that I liked enough to keep. We're in the midwest but they survive winter very well here, we put lots of straw on the inside floor and that's about it and have never had a problem with them.

The first hatchery chickens I ever ordered were 25 wlr cornish.

I had one hen for the past 6 years unfortunately she had a heart attack this summer. Also she had frozen both of her feet off when she was 3 but she lived fine but was definantly obese. Thats why we called her Bertha

. The leg problem was because we didn't have proper size bars for her to roost on and so she couldn't cover her feet. She was the only one who ever had a problem.

All in all though they are wonderful chubs, mine always ran up for treats.

Do they tend to have "weight" problems?

The Cornish I have outside, stay pretty lean and move well, they are even flying up to the 7 ft high roost.

Some of the older exhibition birds (ie 'too expensive to be out of the coop') can get chunky if you don't watch them. I have one Roo who has such a wide flat back that if he looses his balance and ends up on his back he can't flip back over. He has a low roost and I keep a hen with him so he has help if he needs it.
