I have had both the Cornish cross and white Leghorns. The Cornish are much stockier even as little chicks and have pretty thick legs. Leghorns are generally a little taller as well as longer and more slender.
Based on your description of the live ones the one that died was probably a Cornish X.

Can you really order just one chick at a time? I'd think that it would be more likely to die, being alone and without the body heat from other chicks.

Edited to add- almost forgot! Congratulations on your new little chicks! :wee

The minimum they can ship is 3, so I am ordering 2 extra meat chicks. Part of the reason why my husband is wanting to butcher the extras we have is because my six chicks I originally wanted turned into 8, then 10, and now we're going to have 12. It's just so hard to choose! :hit

Your photos are very nice...I hope you update us with more as they grow! Now you've got us all curious about what they are.

Right now they do look much the same. What color are their legs? The cornish x usually have pale pinkish legs but not always.

The first chick has paler legs than the secon but they are slightly smaller in size.

Here is chick number one:

And chick number too:

Yes but 2 cornish cross are going to make like one enchilada casserole. lol Slight exaggeration but that's not a lot of meat once you subtract bones, feathers, skin and guts.

What breed would you suggest I raise for meat then? To keep my husband happy with all of this I have to give him some good birds to put in the freezer lol

Thank you! I am totally in love with my little rainbow flock. I will definitely let you all know what they turn out to be

After reading all of your comments, I think that I have one of each breed so I changed the replacement from the white leghorn to another broiler. Instead of getting another Cornish Cross, Meyer let me change my order of 3 chicks to a variety of Rangers. Thank you all for your help!
