White mucus in mouth and gurgled breathing

Hi all,

One of my silky roosters has not been doing well. His breathing is gurgly and had a white mucus in his mouth which smelled really bad.

Have been trying vet rx and some vitamin water but still not looking well.

The white mucus seems to be gone but the smell and gurgly is still there and he seems lethargic.

Should I try an antibiotic? Tylan 50?

Any help is greatly appreciated.

Can you take some photos of your rooster?

How old is he?

Both Sour Crop and Canker can produce a bad smell, so you will want to see how his crop is functioning. (is it emptying overnight) Re-look inside the beak for any pasty material stuck to the roof of his beak, inside his throat, etc. Take some photos of the inside of his beak. If you were seeing white, then it may have been thrush from sour crop.

If the crop is sour, then an antibiotic can make it worse, you would need to treat with an anti-fungal medication as described in this article https://www.backyardchickens.com/ar...w-to-know-which-one-youre-dealing-with.73607/

Canker is usually more of a yellowish type color inside the beak that produces rotten smelling lesions. Treatment is with an antiprotozoal like Metronidazole.

Respiratory illness can also cause mucous. Does he have any discharge from the nostrils, facial swelling, bubbles or watery eyes? Tylan is good to use to treat MG, but having a bad odor, if it's respiratory disease causing the symptoms, then Coryza comes to mind and you would treat with a Sulfa Antibiotic.

If you have vet care, that's always best.

Be sure he is up to date on deworming, if it has not been given in a long time, give him dewormer. Worms weaken the imnune system enough to allow symptoms like this to start appearing.

Clean all your waterers with an abrasive sponge or disinfectant as well.

Hopefully the symptoms will stay mild and pass. Photos are helpful for more accurate diagnosis.

I was able to take some pics this morning. He has yellow stuff caked around his nostrils and does have stuff on the roof of his mouth.

The entire flock has been recently dewormed.

My vet has been MIA and that is why I am trying to treat myself. Not to mention the expense.

Any help is greatly appreciated.

I must say this has progressed but not sure if for better or for worse. He had a lot more mucus in his mouth before and it seemed white and not yellow like it is now.

Clean his nostrils out so he can breath a little easier.

You didn't mention if his crop had emptied. I suppose it doesn't matter, but some of the gurgling can still come from that.
With a bad odor, I would either treat with Metronidazole or a Sulfa Antibiotic. Still hard to tell if it's Canker or Coryza.

The crop does seem to empty overnight. My vet responded to a picture I sent and she said it looks like canker.

How can I treat this?

If your vet said they thought it was canker, did they not advise treatment or prescribe some meds?

Metronidazole is usually the treatment for Canker.

Unfortunately, my vet hasn't responded.

I have read I can use API General Cure for 5 days that is available at the pet store.

He weighs about 2.5 lbs. What would the dose be?

Or can I use it in a waterer?
