I was using a white one and today I put in a red one - these guys love to party all night. Anyhow, I noticed they huddle under it. With the white one they would hang out around the endge of it. Are the red lamps cooler even though they are the same wattage?

hi.
i prefer the red heat lamp.
dont know why, i think its because thats all they were selling.
i dont think its so "bright"
kinda like a happy medium!

No, same heat, but the whites are alot brighter ,and chicken will start pecking on each other. Red are alway better when it comes to brooding.

I have used both. With a white light they seem to not get enough rest and they grow faster as they eat more. With a red they sleep more and get some rest and so do I as the broody box is on the other side of our bedroom wall and the head of our bed. If chicks are picking they are too crowded. As mine grow I add another broody bin, and another, and another if necessary. Right now I have 12 chicks and tomorrow I'm setting up anothe bin and putting 6 and 6. They are less than a week old.

They're much mellower tonight with the red lamp...we're actually worried because they are TOO mellow. But this could be normal vs. hyped up on white light, KWIM?

We'll see how they are in the morning and go from there.

I have a red light and my 18 chicks have been partying all night. It is now 3:48 am and they are still going strong.

Try the lightless heat element for reptiles. It looks kinda like a ceramic light bulb (except flat on the end). Now my chicks get normal daylight but still have heat. They seem much calmer than my first batch. The bulb is pricey, but should last just about forever. Rated for 5 years while on 24/7.

I was at our local chain pet store picking up another hygrometer & saw those heat emitters and wondered if it would be too much for our chicks. I think I will go back & pick one up as the chicks are currently in my bedroom & even the red light kept me up last night!

I have a rheostat controller as well & wonder if I could plug it into there to control the heat as they age.
