Pros? Cons? Do you paint over it once you're done?

Consulting with a construction friend of mine, he basically said unless I am using some sort of redwood to build my coop/run, which I didn't, It would be better to paint a few coats to protect the wood. Many of us tend to go cheap when building these things and the lower grade wood, just does not work well with the elements.
