I’ve searched through the old threads, but I still have three questions about putting whitewash in my coop.

1. I know it’s mildly caustic/irritating when wet, but is it inert once it dries? Such that I can paint the roosts and nesting boxes with it?

2. Will the salt content rust out hardware cloth?

3. Will the lime degrade the 10mil plastic I use to cover the coop? The contact will be incidental at worst; there’s very little wood in contact with the plastic.

Thanks!

I used whitewash one time about 30 years ago. It was inside a garden shed that I wanted to prevent insects from establishing in. (not a chicken coop)
After some time the whitewash did start to peel. Maybe I did not make up the batch correctly. :idunno Maybe the hot, cold, and humid conditions also affected the whitewash.
In hindsight, I should have went to paint store , and purchased some of their mis-tints paint at a discount. Using the whitewash was motivated to save money at that time.
WISHING YOU BEST,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,, :highfive:
