Getting a bator some day... Already thinking about who's next and thinking I want some real lovers! I have one named Cuddle Muffin who definitely lives up to her name! What breeds do you think like to cuddle, be carried and get their bellies rubbed!!

Who do you think is the friendliest bantam?

Friendliest standard?

We have been lucky and have a lot of friendly chickens in both standards and bantams.

In our bantams are friendliest would be our cochins and silkies.

In our standards i would have to say our Delawares , they love to follow us around everywhere

When I was a kid, my parents had Barred Rocks and Rhode Island Reds... of those, the RIR's were the sweet natured ones. One RIR in particular "Sweet Virginia" would walk in to our house and make herself at home. My mother began feeding her extra special scraps and treats, and pretty soon that hen began a morning routine where she would lay an egg in a giant cooking wok under our kitchen table every day.
My vote for standard : RHODE ISLAND RED
I live in town and was looking for a way to get back to my "roots" so-to-speak, so I researched what chicken breed does best in a household pet situation and found hands down, all the research pointing to Silkies. My little darling Pei Pei is a pet quality white Silkie, from a hatchery - purchased as a day-old chick and hand raised by me. She is very mellow, takes lots of cat naps in front of the air conditioner, walks around the house politely eating crumbs the dogs have left, and dosn't challenge the confines of her yard. My son's friends can hold her and she falls asleep purring like a kitten while the boys are watching tv.
My vote for bantam : SILKIE

Friendliest....

Bantams: d'Uccles (my Mille Fleurs are my sweetest chickens)
Standards: Buff Orpingtons (inquisitive, huggable and not flighty). Speckled Sussex takes a close second.

My Silkies are sweet too, but I have to go to them to pick them up, my d'Uccles come to me.

I don't know anything about other bantams, but we had some Dutch Banties that were real sweethearts. Even the roo loved to be held.

As for the standard breeds, I'd say it's a toss-up between RIR's & EE's. I have girls of both breeds that are just the friendliest things. They will follow me around the yard like little puppy dogs and beg to be held. Once picked up, they will take their heads and just nuzzle it against my neck and shoulder. They also love it when I stroke their ear muffs. They get this funny look on their faces like they just died and gone to heaven.

The strange thing is, we also have 3 Sicilian Buttercups. They're often described as being fidgety and flighty, but our girls are nothing like that. One even likes to fly up onto my shoulder and preen my hair. Go-figure.

Well, I don't get real friendly with my chickens. If they don't peck me, I consider them friendly but I will say my welsummers are the mildest chickens. They never peck and let me catch them when they get loose.
Aa for my bantams, my serama roo has turned real ugly and attacks me everytime I reach in the pen but I have 5 mille fleur roos and they never attack me. My silkies never attack me either. But of all my chickens, I really love a buff laced Polish and thought they were the best breed until I hatched a roo to go with her and he pecks me all the time, lol. I really think it can vary completely within a breed.

I love these stories!!

Stroking ear muffs and preening your hair! So cute!!

Silkiefan: do yours wear a diaper? Any chance mine get they come in the house and poop all over the kitchen!
The laying the egg in the wok story is hilarious!

Our Ameracaunas are most likely to approach us. We have one that just flies up to hang out all the time.

Our RIR is most aloof.

Once you have our Wyandotte in your lap, she'll just go to sleep there. She's tough to catch though.

Maran, BO, and Welsummers are pretty level headed and kind of indifferent. They could either take it or leave it.

I have to say for standard is Black Australorp. Mine follows me around the yard follows me into the house and lets me hold her constantly!

My bantam that is the sweetest is my Red Pyle Roo. He is so curious he comes right up to me and lets me hold him. My next closest banty would be my aracauna roo.

all of my chickens are great though. Althought I have 2 millie x aracauna that freak out at everything.
