I have my first egg of the year!!!! HOORAY!!!! I found it when I got home from work.

Who would you guess is the layer? I have:

3 older australorps that began laying in early March last year;

1 2 YO production red that stopped laying in November when she molted;

1 GLW;

1 SLW;

1 BR;

1 White Rock;

1 Buff Orpington.

The last 5 were hatched June 2 and have not started laying yet, or have they?

I have the egg still on the counter for my DH to find when he gets home.

My DH and I found the scale in a antique store in Berkley Springs, WV. We gave it to friends of ours that had chickens. A couple of years later, when they gave us their hens, they gave us the scale, as well. We oiled it and calibrated it and use it to measure all of our fresh eggs.

I have seen several models of this scale in pictures on BYC.

My guess is the production Red.

You can find those on ebay. I have a new one from Murry McMurray and I love it. It was a xmas present.

Chicken Women: Trixie (the production red) has a pink comb, not red like it was before she molted. When she was laying, she never laid a medium, only extra large and jumbo. I guess this is possible for the first egg of the year...

However, my wyadottes and rocks have really red combs and waddles.

You can find the exact same egg scales on ebay in various conditions for various prices. There's one with no bids with a reserve at $6 and one with several bids for $40. Probably because the latter comes with the original instructions too. Jiffy Way also has their new version out if you look on many hatchery or poultry supply sites.

Be careful buying one on ebay as I bought one and had to pay return shipping as it would not calibrate. That's why my DH got me a new one at Murrays.
