I'm pretty new to incubation. But I've noticed strong changes, other than veining, in an egg at day 5 that indicates fertility. Something to do with the yolk changing to flattening out like a pancake.
The signs I'm referring to are seen by candling the egg in an upright position and holding the flashlight on top then behind the egg. When held at the top there is clear separation of the top and bottom of the egg. When the light is held behind a fertile egg it has a 3 layer "candy corn" effect. This comes in handy in candling darker eggs like Marans. When you can't see the veining but the separation top to bottom and candy corn effect are very evident. Quite a bit depends on how you hold the flashlight. I believed to this starts about day 5 and only lasts a couple of days.
I've included some pics of 2 different bantam eggs. Showing the candy corn effect and top-bottom separation. I'll attach the Marans pics in a 2nd post to avoid confusion.
My question is does anyone else candle, fetility check, like this? Most videos and instructions advise laying eggs on their side making these observations useless. Could be helpful for people with dark eggs.
