The rooster is at least 2 feet tall, and the hens are about up to my knee (18" or so), so yes, they are humongous birds! The reason the chicks are so big is probably because the mamas are about 18 months old, so the chicks had plenty of room to grow in their hen eggs! RIR are the best layers as far as purebred brown egg-laying birds go. Leghorns (white egg layers) are better, as are sex-links, but sex-links are not purebred.
Here's a pic of one of the roos dad had. I don't know for sure if this is the same one he has now, he had 4 and sold all but 1. It probably is though, as dad kept the one with the biggest comb. You can see some of the hens in the background, behind the big white rock roo taking up the pic
