In the end we had a look and there was a whole bunch of 'stuff' that wasn't absorbed and blood everywhere. When my husband picked up the little dead body wierd fluid gushed out of the mouth..

natural selection I guess. It was an EE from a pink egg. There are 5 more from pink EE eggs.

On the flip side we are up to 9 chicks, 3 quail, and 7 pips so

I'm off to bed. I wonder if anybody will be waiting for me tomorrow morning

Oh, sorry 'bout the little one.

It happens to us all.
I love the tuftless/rumpless Araucanas. I used to have one. DH always said she looked like an ostrich. Her name was Hedwig. We lost her to an oppossum in March... she was setting & she was alone in the henhouse when it came in to steal eggs.
She was my favorite.

I would like to get some more someday, but right now I have so many other breeds going that I don't have anywhere to put new ones!
The faverolles are my newest infatuation. Too bad only one has hatched so far. Darn that crappy shipping!!! I am supposed to wait until spring for my replacement shipment... we'll see how long I hold out. I'm thinkin' I'll be lucky to make it to January!

My kids were looking forward to the ducks. Maybe we'll try again.

My DH, on the other hand, thinks these RIR chicks are awesome! First, they're HUGE! Secondly, he knows what an RIR looks like as an adult & he likes it. (I think he's getting a little tired of my "showy" birds.) Third, he know that RIRs lay. And they lay well. He likes that quality in a chicken.
So... are these free rangin' RIRs as monstrously large as they're chicks & eggs suggest?
Oh, and is the RIR rooster mean? I've always heard that the roosters are mean. We've only ever had hens. DH likes the look of RIR roos & has already suggested keeping one for breeding if we end up with one. I'm just concerned about the personality.
I haven't told the kids yet that their ducklings are chicks! Now we just have the guinea egg.

The rooster is at least 2 feet tall, and the hens are about up to my knee (18" or so), so yes, they are humongous birds! The reason the chicks are so big is probably because the mamas are about 18 months old, so the chicks had plenty of room to grow in their hen eggs! RIR are the best layers as far as purebred brown egg-laying birds go. Leghorns (white egg layers) are better, as are sex-links, but sex-links are not purebred.

Here's a pic of one of the roos dad had. I don't know for sure if this is the same one he has now, he had 4 and sold all but 1. It probably is though, as dad kept the one with the biggest comb. You can see some of the hens in the background, behind the big white rock roo taking up the pic

Here is a pic of one cockerel that was hatched here last fall. This 'little' guy is about 3 1/2 to 4 months old in the pic

On day 18, you should be putting them in lockdown, if they are chicken eggs. Keep the incubator closed & the humidity up!

My eggs are due to hatch on the 26th, a saturday. Going into Lockdown Thursday, the 24th.
