They are bound to lay soon for you. This is my first layer out of 24 new chickens this year. I truly had thought the Partridge rocks or the BO's would be the first layers.
Chickens like to surprise us.

I thought my two Golden Sexlinks would have layed first but it was my 2 leghorns and RIR! We might end up with 5 layers out of 9 in the next week!

Our chickens, in a great variety of breeds 13 total chickens, 7 different breeds. They are all around 14-15 weeks old. And anytime any of their behaviors change a little bit, we are always like "egg?" We have given them egg peptalks (not that that does anything) and we always joke around, saying "maybe if we squeeze hard enough one will pop out?". We are just super anxious for the first egg.

Can hens be broody before they lay? I haven't found any eggs but yesterday I had to make some adjustments to my coop because some water got in during one of the crazy hard rains we've had. Anyway I was cleaning out the wet bedding and shuffling things around to see where the water came in and my little leghorn was right there with me just clucking her little head off. Then she did the same thing in the evening and this morning when I checked for eggs. She was on the other side of the run munching on watermelon... then she's right at my feet cussing me out.

I have the same question. Mine started practicing egg songs at 18 weeks and now at 21 weeks they stopped singing and still no eggs :/

What I did was set up several boxes with a couple golf balls in them. One is in a little tykes playhouse (our girls are far to big to play with it). I set it up in an area they all hang out, once I was finished they all were interested in what I did and they took turns checking the place out & move the balls around. Only one hen has consistently layed there. BUT in the past few days a few hens started making their own nesting spots. One on the second shelf in the garage next to the entry door & one under the porch stairs. Our ducks have consistently laid in the xl nesting box in their temporary coop. This is our first time with chickens & ducks, a never ending learning process. Make sure they know where the boxes are and where they should lay. Good luck

Last night when locking down the coop I noticed some yolk and poop mix on floor at door. This morning I found a broken no shelled egg under the roost. Looks like we have another EE getting tiny the laying business, just don't know who yet. Our one EE Coco has been laying every day and arrow is on an very other day schedule.

I think anything is possible but I do not think your leghorn is broody. Mine fuss at me all the time just like that and have never gone broody. They will sit in the nest and puff up at you when you come in as well as growl if they are broody.

So how do you get the eggs? And do they stay broody after you repeatedly take their eggs?
