I had the benefit of being in a country that starts teaching second languages early in life (ie. the best way to learn a language), so I do know some French. Unfortunately, I seem to have some sort of hearing issue or auditory comprehension issue (could be either or both as I had horrible ear infections and ruptures as a kid), and never was able to actually pick up a spoken language, just reading and writing. Heck, comprehending spoken English is hard enough for me. I'd like to try my hand (literally) at American Sign Language because it is a purely visual language, and I'm really a visual person.
All I can say is what helped me most with the spoken were subtitled movies that had very accurate translations. Basically, play to your strengths, be they visual, auditory, or other. Best of luck, and good job for setting such a good goal for yourself.
