Hi everyone I've been lurking here awhile. I've got 28 chickens of various breeds. I ordered some from mcmurray hatchery, and received a free 'rare' chick. I'm nearly positive its a cuckoo Maran roo. So I have 4 kids and my youngest is going to be 3 in july. I don't want to have rooster aggressive problems with my kids. My sister has had to cull 2 roos so far for attacking her son. So who has Maran roos and how are they with kids. If your maran roo is good with kids what did you do to train him? My maran is 4 weeks and so far he is really a pretty bird. My 5 year old son named him diesel:)
Thanks and sorry for the long post.

I'm not sure that you can rely on breed to tell temperment. I think that each roo has its own personality...some of it comes from lineage and alot come from 'raisin'.

I have a roo that used to be the gentlest thing ever and now only DH will go into his pen.

So, I think you have to always be careful even if you pick a gentler breed....you just never know.

Thanks for the reply. I will just watch him then. And handle him as much as possible. He is such a pretty bird I do like barred chickens.

I have a cuckoo maran roo with his cuckoo maran girls and he's sooo docile and treats his girls so sweetly. He doesn't make them bald, and he takes care of the business as gently as he can. I couldn't ask for a better boy. That said, as Camelot Farms says, you can't rely on breed. Each and every rooster is different, but I will say that my marans, cuckoos and black coppers, are the most gentle and friendly of all my chickens.

I have a fantastic Cuckoo Marans roo. He was a little handful during puberty however after that he settled down and runs free taking care of his girls. Very attentive and sweet. My kids are around him constantly and he has never tried any funny business with them. P.S. HE is HUGE!

I had two wheaten marans and they were docile and wonderfu in temperment. One was like a dog and would follow me around and everyhthing. They are big roos, but in my experience very sweet.

Oh thanks everyone! I'm glad to see so many nice marans. My sisters roos where GLW and a NHR. She is working with some EE's now to replace them. I live in idaho and they will be free ranging so I want a roo to protect the girls.
