ANCONA DUCKLINGS to be specific.

They are twelve days old.

1. Most of them ALREADY have large, cracked swellings on their foot pads--not under the toe joints, but the 'ball' of the foot. BUT THEY'RE ONLY TWELVE DAYS OLD!

Wanted to order from Holderread, but they don't carry Anconas anymore

So ordered from another hatchery.

2. One came with badly splayed legs. I hobbled them, but it was so weak it starved to death the day after they got here. BUT HERE IS THE GRIPE OF POINT TWO HERE: Two two four other ducklings are quite unsteady on their feet, trip, wobble when they move about, stand still, etc.

3. When standing, almost none of them can raise a foot off the ground to scratch themselves WITHOUT FALLING OVER. The other leg gives out. Now maybe I lack enough experience, but this is something you'd expect in a bird one or two days old, BUT ALMOST TWO WEEKS??

4. Three of the ducklings have stunted growth compared to the others. One especially....scrawny too.

5. Several of them have very thin down on parts of their bodies--neck and near bend of 'wings'. The pink skin is clearly visible through the thin yellow down. One seems to have a BARE PATCH on side of neck.

DO ANY OF YOUR DUCKLINGS HAVE ANYTHING LIKE THIS AT SO YOUNG AN AGE?

I assert that it is the fault of the hatchery, and specifically, deficient diet of the breeders. All of the above point to NIACIN deficiency, if you look to Holderread's book. These birds have been weak on the legs from the start. And just this evening, to my intense displeasure, I noticed the large, cracked swellings on the balls of their little feet.

YES, I have had them on Niacin per Holderread's dosage since the beginning

NO, I haven't brooded them on concrete!!!!!!! Good gracious!!

IF YOU SEE ANYTHING LIKE THIS, YOUR REPLY WOULD BE APPR'D. I do NOT think you will find ANY of this stuff if you have good quality stock.

Apparently, I didn't get so lucky.

thanks for reading

WOW sound's like you got some really bad bird's.So sorry for you and the poor duckling's.I have been raising duck's for about 5 year's now.I have only experienced 2 really bad hatched duckling's myself.I have never had a duck hatch splayed leg but had one that apparenlty had a spinal injury for some reason during birth and one that basicaly had an upside down neck.I brooded the spinal case for a month before We knew she was never going to walk and the one with the neck she lived about a week and We tried splinting the neck and everything.Gosh I don't know what to tell ya really.Just work on the survivor's.Don't give them medicated feed.Keep them warm and as dry as possible.I have raised duck's some with one foot (turtle attack), severe dog bite's,one missing a top bill ,sucessfully.Don't give up on them.Keep Us updated on the rest.GB. Wow, bad, bad hatchery. I've never had such bad luck with ducklings. I've had bald spots several times. Sometimes they grow so fast they out grow their fuzz.

Right now I have 3 very healthy runners in the brooder eating and pooping like mad.

I don't have anything to add, just wanted to say sorry you are having such a bad experience. I just got an order in from Cackle and they are healthy so far and running around like little maniacs. Have you contacted the hatchery yet? I would be very vocal about something like this. Sounds like you are doing what you can for them, I hope they recover.

I got an order of Anconas from Cackle hatchery last year and all did fine. Don't know what the problem with yours is--- I mean, obviously your hatchery doesn't WANT to sell problem ducklings. Maybe it's just bad luck or maybe they did something wrong--- got a bad batch of feed for their breeders or something. Hope your ducklings recover.

Thanks for replies so far, folks!

State Inspector coming to look.........

Hatchery prepared to refund, but I want good birds, not money, from this...........

Nissa, how I wish I had your 'luck'!

Just this am, ducks can't scratch themselves standing up without falling over once they get one foot off the ground. 13 day old birds should be beyond this.

Yesterday, one ofo them fell over onto back, and tried and tried to get up--took him a minute anyway to finally do it. Another bad sign.......

As he struggled to get up and other ducklings came to check him out, one of them, being week on its legs, was 'standing' on its hocks. Another bad sign..............

Very glad I had the camera to catch all this!

Hatchery is getting some photos, too!

Hey duckmonk--how are the ducklings doing? I am SOOO sorry to hear about your bad experience. It's so awful to watch the little babies struggling so.

It just occurred to me today to ask whether there is any chance you received a bad batch of feed? I recently lost a duckling and had several others display very similar symptoms to what you describe, and it turned out to be a batch of bad feed--except the one who died, all recovered within a day of switching their feed. In my case, it was my fault--I thought I had dumped last year's grower feed and replaced it, but it turned out I had been feeding them with feed that had been sitting in a bin for over a year. It only took a couple days on the bad feed for them to start displaying symptoms.

I'm not suggesting that you've made the same mistake I did. But is it possible that the bag of feed you purchased had been sitting in a warehouse for a long time? Or had gotten wet at some point or had gone bad for some other reason?

In addition to everything else you're doing, could you switch them entirely for a day or two and see if they improve?

Of course, the fact that one came already splay-legged does not speak well for the hatchery. However, any hatchery will occasionally send a damaged or poorly developed duckling, so it could just be a coincidence.

Anyway--this all just occurred to me because of my recent experience, and I thought I'd share in case it helps. I hope you get satisfaction one way or another--I hope something can be done for the ducklings--and in any event, my heart goes out to you.

IAM

Thank you!!

Y'know, the feed thing did cross my mind. I actually called local co-op yesterday and asked if they would let me exchange the feed i bought.

they said yes.

so your post is the 'sign' i will take to get the new feed today.............

at least we'll know one way or other................
