who has experience with coyotes and live traps?

alright,
we have lived at our place 6 years and have heard the coyotes running in packs at night, its an unsettling sound to say the least.
we have seen them spooking the deer, especially when the fawn are born.
they have killed some of the farmers calves and cattle in the pasture behind us, thus he now has llamas, donkey and goats to help protect the herd.
now, we have chickens and have secured our coop and run as best as we can.
someone gave us a coyote live trap and we set it up at the edge of our property...
no coyote have been spotted... are they on to us? we spotted coyote during the day time in the field right next to our property just a few weeks ago.
what should we bait it with (a live chicken or other creature is not an option here since we have small children and dont want to upset them or the creature)
should we camouflage the cage with branches and weeds?
should we move the trap to a different spot every so often?
any success stories or suggestions to catch these predators.?
we keep our kids in unless we are outside with them, dont want to take any chances there either.

If you trap has a little compartment on it like mine has, then you cna put a live chicken in it and nothing can get in and kill the chicken..

But A fresh dead chicken works great on bobcats..

I have tried catching coyotes to no avail.. I tried a dead chicken also..

But if anyone hunts in your family you might can throw some meat out and like hide in some bushes.. and when they come to eat... BANG

Early morning is the best time to hunt them, most sporting goods places sell a wounded rabbit call or have it on tape or by now even cd, I still use a tape. I've had my best luck with trapping using scents that I've gotten just for that purpose, it will lure them in and then some canned tuna will get them into the trap. Just make sure to dispatch it instead of relocating it, after all it will just become someone else's problem.

I've actually never known anyone who wanted to trap a coyote, everyone I know just want to shoot them LOL! I would definately second that, if you catch one KILL IT, do not let it go. It will either come back and be wise to your traps, or it will become someone else's problem.

And don't depend on dogs to alert you of their presence. I have personally witnessed a Coyote go up and sniff a sleeping dog and then it ran out to the horse pen and stood under our mare so I couldn't get a shot off, when she finally workrd her way to the fenceline he just simply disappeared into the tall grass. Yes he, I was that close to him. As long as you can hear the coyotes calling you can sleep well, it's when all gets silent that they are on the hunt.

my question is what are you going to do with the coyote once you trap them? it is easier to just kill them than to catch them then have to kill them.

Skip the live trap. Move to snares and deadfalls. Snares are cheap, and set for a coyote will not likely catch anything but canines. Deadfalls, and the figure 4 trigger, are about free to make. It helps the use older downed wood, and to leave it out for several days to age it a bit (scent lingers). Bait the trigger with meat. If you aren't familiar with a figure 4 trigger, it's just 3 twigs with notches cut in them. You can google it to get a pic of the correct notches, and setting techniques. I only go after coyotes as vermin, and not for pelts, so I use neither. I prefer a gun or bow, since they're more selective of their targets than a trap.

Coyotes are difficult to live trap as they are wary of humans or their scent.. I just shoot them

I really dislike coyotes...they are brazen as all get out. Skittish, jumpy and danged annoying. We had one try to get into my chicken tractor one day with me standing about 20 feet away in my garden. As I garden armed with a 30-30 because of the mountain lions, Mr. Coyote paid for being so brazen. My chickens were not even IN the Tractor at the time, they were in the house in their brooder.

coyote pelts are worth money. check with a tannery near you. You can also get one of those cool hats made from the pelt.
