Who has light/nightlight in coop?

QVC.com sells xmas lights that run on batteries/timers... I have lots of them for my house, but now have a new purpose for them:) I especially like that they have timers!

I used a solar garden/walkway light on a stake. I take it out of the coop and put in a planter to recharge in the AM when I let the beasts out. Then in the early evening it goes back in its holder. Kinda like an internal porch light. I only used it when they were young until they got the idea of heading in with enough light to get on their perches.

I have a 13w CFL in my coop on 24/7. I was not aware of circadian rhythm until I read this post, but it makes sense to let them sleep a little. I attributed the light being on to them laying in the winter, but it might be just because they are happy birds.

They will sleep fine with a light on. They do during the day as well.
Often hens will lay well their first year with or without light.
Of course having happy birds helps with everything.

Yeah, I use a solar light too. I have it at the edge of their pen, but mostly to attract bugs for the chicks to dig into at dusk. I've definetly had less flying insects around the house at night, so I assume it's working.

I am thinking about getting this solar rope light from Harbor Freight. http://www.harborfreight.com/solar-rope-light-68353.html I figure it would give them enough light to see, but not so much that it would mess with their sleep. I did read reviews from other solar lights by the same company and people were getting bad batteries in them, so i would probably replace the NiCd's with NiMh's. For $15 I'm not out much if it is too bright in the coop, but I thought I'd get some more experienced opinions before I get it, after all I've only had chickens for a week (3 polish, 7 silkies).
