Who has Pekins?

I'm really excited to go get them! There are 3 males and 3 females. Too bad it wasnt 5 to 1, but I am still happy!! I'll post pics once I get them all settled in tomorrow or Monday!!

I have 6 Pekins too. 3 males, 3 females. I just hatched out 4 of their eggs and they're going to a new home with 17Roses. (She doesn't know yet. Shhhhhhhhh) LOL

I also went to TSC the other day and they had the cutest little crested Pekin that I had to get it!!

I sell duck eggs on ebay and they're flying out of here. My Pekins are great and they're definitely characters. The drakes don't like my husband in their pen unless he brings treats. So when he does go in without the treats, they nibble on his pant legs!! LOL

I adore them! Good luck with yours!!

Both of my Pekins were wonderful ducks. We lost the drake, Starry, back in the summer to dogs and then this winter our female Comet passed on due to some illness - or we think she ate something not so good for her...just not totally sure. Starry would actually try to defend me when our rooster would go after me. Not very successfully mind you cause he would get in there, peck at Peep and then run straight away...

The amazing thing about Comet was that she actually adopted a kitten in the fall/winter. The kitten saw her as his momma and would check in with her and try to play with her and they would cuddle together. They both lived in the shed together for months and were each others companion. He was pretty lost when she passed...

I don't see him often but know he's around and I am sure he misses her a lot. I am hoping to get some new ducks soon.

Well, we got them!!! I think they may be scared of us though!! Me and the girls were trying to feed them and they just kept running away... Hopefully they'll get used to us soon!

give them some treats. mine love scrabbled eggs. in the evening, when its time to go to bed, i go out and get my chicken stick or staff for the hard head young cockerels and the ducks know its time to go inside. the drake will bring the girls around the pen but i have to put them in. last year i left them out night and day they would always put themselves to bed in the pen each night.

lately, i have only been letting the girls out of the pen. the drake tries to attack/breed my younger pekin, and that really upsets the young ones

the younger ones are 3 or 4 wks old and they already push around the adult bantam brahma roos. i have 4 different age groups and i have noticed the dominate trait in them all

my adult drake will fight the roosters no matter the size. he has taught them to get out to the way when he or his girl walk through.

last summer also, we had a poultry fight. it was drake against rooster and guinea refereeing. it was very funny.

the rooster would fly up and try to kick the drake, but the drake would duck down and then come up behind the roo and bite him on the back.

they quite laying last year around november and started back up in january. i have been getting one large egg a day since then from my pekin female. oh yeah, they do lay in their first year.

I love my Pekins!! I started out with 5,then hatched a couple (only one made it though, she's my handicapped gal and spoiled rotten LOL) After giving 2 Drakes away and a coon killing one of my girls I'm now left with 1 Drake and 2 Gals. They're full of personality and so beautiful. Mine all answer to their names, come up from the pond when I call them, very very smart. My handicapped Gal that I hatched out and kept with me in the house her first two months thinks she's half duck and half human. She will sit in my arms, climb up in my lap if I sit on the ground and she hugs and kisses me. My ducks will all run to greet me when I go out to their pen or walk out in the yard when they're free ranging, however if anyone else walks towards them they run and hide behind me or just plain run LOL My Pekins love plain cheerios tossed into a dish of water, but if they see or hear the bag of peas in my hand they will literally dance in circles and "sing" to me ...they love love love their frozen peas!
Each of my girls started laying right at 20 weeks, one of them is 11 months old and the other is 6 months old and I get an egg from each every single day.
Your's are probably acting scared because you're a stranger to them right now...be patient they'll come around. Try talking to them in a soothing voice, approach them slowly and get down low to the ground with them when you can, they'll learn they can trust you and come around. Don't forget the frozen peas...those will win them over quickly ;-)

I have pekins and they are laying eggs...very fertile...

I have a batch in the incubator....I'm so excited.

Love the pekins.... If anyone needs some eggs please do let me know.

Enjoy those babies!
Have a blessed day!

Ok, Pekin owners, another question.... Do the drakes not have a curl in their tail? I have been studying them and really see no difference in any of them. I know I have 2 hens, because I get 2 eggs every morning.... But, I got a new drake yesterday (mallard or rouen, I'm not sure) and he has a serious issue with one of the Pekins. He's been pickin on him all morning. I assume it's a drake, woud be pick on a hen...? Any help is appreciated!

My pekin lily attempts to go broody! She's sat on a nest she hid from me twice. However, when I found them, there were a couple of broken and rotten eggs that didn't hold up well to her huge bum!

Anyways, I mostly have to do an easter egg hunt ever week to find her eggs, and currently I haven't found a single one in 3 weeks. I'm pretty sure she is laying them in the water (2 acre pond) as she swims around. Boooooooooo

Yes, I had Pekin drakes and they all had curls in their tails. They also had thicker heads, and their voices were quieter and raspy. I ended up processing the Pekin drakes and just kept my Cayuga drake. The Pekins were pretty rough with the girls. I've also got an IR drake who stayed away from the girls until recently. It seems like recently, the Cayuga drake is letting his IR buddy have some fun every now and then. To answer your question, they do sometimes look like they're picking on the hens when they're breeding. They will grab her by the back of the head with their bill, shove her head down on the ground (sometimes pecking at the back of her head/neck), then mount her. The Pekins were pretty mean about the whole mating thing. My girls ended up bald from them. That's why the Pekin boys got processed. My Cayuga does his job quickly, and allows the girls to get right back up.
