I do not necessarily hate them but, if they came up around the house or coop I would dispose of them. So far the only problems I've had in 20 years on and off of having chickens are dogs.

A friend of mine had a tame raccoon once. It was a clever little thing much smarter than dogs/cats. I'm sure if if would have found the can opener it would have opened cans of food for itself. It was kinda cool he had a built it an indoor tree house with a door it opened and closed. It could do a lot of tricks and seemed to learn quickly. May be why they such worthy adversaries to the chicken owner.

That was a very nice story Imp! Sorry about you losing the chickens, but it was very touching. I'm sure they chose the cherries over the chickens as it would be too much work to chase one down and pluck all the feathers.

You know what? I don't hate them. They're doing what comes naturally to them, unfortunately for us and the chickens and ducks that they attack.

You have to think of it this way. What if YOU were hungry and someone put this buffet right under your nose? All you had to do was figure out how to get to it.

That's why it's up to US to make sure that our chickens and ducks are secure as possible and to keep them from harm.

It's just like this little rabbit that I was cursing out this morning for eating all my darn blueberries off my bushes. Then I realized that if I didn't want the rabbit to eat everything out of my garden, then I needed to fence it off so that it couldn't get to everything.

So I went out in 91 degree weather today and fenced off most of the garden but I left some for the rabbit who has now become quite dependent on the garden for food. (Of course, I'm NOT leaving ANY of my chickens and ducks exposed for those darn raccoons, they can find food somewhere else!)

Year of the Rooster,
I'm sure you are right. Lazy urban raccoons. The one that got killed had no fear of anything. I know she walked up to the raccon and put her head in its mouth. She used to stand at the fence and aggravate the dogs next door. Her name was Sagwa (means "silly melon headed child" in Chinese).

I like them actually. They are beautiful interesting and highly intelligent animals. ....But get around my birds or back tearing up my pond or roof again and they will join that opossom that wondered into my trap last night. Baited with a left over salmon skin for a coon.
