One of my chickens is dying with the same symptoms as 2 others within the last 6 weeks. I’d like to take her body to have a necropsy done at a nearby lab that does this here in Alabama. Do you know if these labs typically take walk-ins? Or would I have to call first? They are 30 min away and it would be best for me to drop her off on the way to work but I won’t be able to call beforehand since they won’t be open yet. I just didn’t know what the typical procedure is for this. Many thanks!

Where are you located? Necropsy labs can vary with each state. Some require that you go through a local vet, while others do not. I am sure someone here can help if we can get your state location. What symptoms did your birds have before they died? Keep the body refrigerated and take it or send it in on ice packs. Here is a list of necropsy labs:

I am in Alabama. The lab that is closest to me is in Elba.

I would call them first thing in the morning. Make sure that you can bring the body yourself without having a local vet involved. Usually, the earlier they get the body, the easier and more accurate the findings. In the meantime, ice packs and a cooler would be good to get together. Let us know what you find out.
