I'm a total amatuer, but I've gotten some good shots.
I use a Fujifilm Finepix s700.It's very straightforward and easy to use.

I love taking pictures, too! I've done a little professional photography (class reunions, weddings), and I work for an agricultural publishing company that uses some of my pictures in print.

I have a Nikon D60 with SB-600 speedlight and remote, plus a bunch of tripods, light kits, reflectors. I shoot mostly models so I need all that junk.

I just started doing nature/animal photos.

I use Corel photo paint for editing (from the CorelDraw graphics suite X3). It's very easy to use.

Maggie, before you switch equipment do a google search. Put in cannon vs nikon. You'll get tons of info. Cannon and Nikon have some comparable cameras (the D60 and the Rebel for example) Then go to a store and hold both. Feel the weight, the button placement...just how comfortable it feels in your hands. That's where your camera does all its work, in your hands. So it needs to feel right to you.

I took photography for a semester at the college my senior year in high school but I dont have a nice camera now or the equipment. I prefer film over digital, its so relaxing working in the darkroom.
