Who is hatching on Nov. 14???

I have RIR hens and a Light Sussex Rooster. Hen is a first time broody and she only had two eggs ones hatched the other hasnt yet ... how long do you reckon I should wait before ditching the egg ??

don't do what i did wait as long as you can!

The first batch of eggs she was sitting on died due to fluctuations in the weather, so probably the same as what happened to yours

This is her second lot, so she has been sitting for 6 weeks (she is fine) as she would not come off the brood (and I felt sorry for her). I had put eight eggs under her and 2 weeks in, the rooster got into her pen and managed to break all but these two, and like I said one hatched and the other Im waiting on, Im a bit worried to leave the hen much longer as I know it does take it out of them and she really needs to be out and about with her one baby.

Did you break open the eggs in the end ?? When I broke open the first batch they were good sized chicks and couldnt see anything that would have caused them to die so I put it down to the weather temps and the broody leaving the nest for longish periods which was also I reckon due to it getting so hot for a while.
 
Yeah I started a small hole in the big end as if it had pipped and slowly began to peel the shell away. The first 2 were rotten were quitters had started to be something but stopped. They were very stinky I had a friend helping me she had one egg I had another. We started on the 2nd two as soon as i saw movement i freaked.

Today was day 23 on my eggs from what i counted and noone pipped. I also believe weather played a factor in what happened. When I checked them this morning before i took them I could smell rotten eggs and the eggs were sweating like if i took them out of the fridge and placed them in the warmth.

I feel your pain this makes my girl sitting 3 times since I got her which was in june. She has hatched 3 clutches for me and this time she started out with 11 and my roo was picking them off too. He had gotten 4 before i caught him in action. There was 7 left and today 2 was rotten 2 were dead in shell underweight one was deformed no wings and there pigmentation was white instead of black. One i thought would make it was fully formed was breathing but not chirping died soon after it broke its own self out of its shell.

I know my girl needs a break and all but it will be heartbreaking she has done all this work for nothing. She has lost alot of weight i gave her some scrapes tonight i threw into her coop and she ate everything she could reach from her nest. She has 3 eggs left I am not touching them!

Congrats on the one baby chick minx! I hope the other hatches for you!

Question will my hen give up if nothing hatches?

I know that my broody would not give up, dont know if it depends on breed type if some are more stubborn than others. But I think you have to make sure they cant go sitting on any other eggs that have been laid and have heard people keeping them in a cage to cool off for a couple of days to break the brood (seemed harsh, I couldnt do it).
 
Well ... it is defo just the one chick this time round. The hen was out with her one baby today and had ditched the other egg and it had gone very cold.

I cracked it open and it was dead and fully formed. Couldnt see why it would have died ??? Anyway she is a good mom to her one baby and one is better than none

Well you just can't have everything but my duck is doing fine. He is in the brooder with the chicks. They really didn't know what to think of him at first but now they realize he is the warm fluffy one and all want to snuggle by him, lol.

WE HAVE A BABY! I went out early this morning and found a tiny fluffy butt its doing good and is already dried and moving around mom. I am so happy! The other egg is piped but not hatched yet so if I am lucky I'll have 2 little babies! After all this heart break and at 27 days There is a happy ending! Thanks everyone for the support and good thoughts!
