Who is this little guy?

I used to live in Fl Keys and we had plenty of black rat snakes, along with rattlesnakes. I think rat snakes inhabit most of the US, I have caught them here as well as FL. With the snake being young and smaller it probably is not big enough for rats yet. And unfortunately as much help as snakes are they just cannot keep up with rodent breeding. If you have one rat you have plenty more, sorry. You may need a cat if you don't have one, but they will kill the snakes too.

Okay, why a racer as opposed to a black rat? Im looking at all kinds of pictures on Google and I just cant hardly tell the difference.

Yeah, I agree with those that say it's a rat snake or a racer. It's not venomous, that much I can tell. Venomous snakes have a triangular shaped head due to their venom glands. A non venomous snake has more of a streamline head shape, and from the picture you posted, your little garden friend seems to have a streamline head shape. Maybe he'll eat the mice and moles for you.
