Sorry you lost so many in such a short stretch. I am doing all the same but can’t help the stress of hot summers and wildfires. My original flock all had to temporarily move to a friend’s farm after we burned down and that and the smoke must have been quite unhealthy for them. I only lost one shortly after, but many others in the years since. Now I also seem to have Marek’s in the flock, which I found out after buying some unvaccinated chicks last year.Quality feed, plenty of greens, fresh water and fresh air. Since this original post, I have lost one of the Buff Orpingtons, one Crele bantam, one of the RI bantams, and the Dominique bantam over the winter. And amazingly, two of the Cuckoo Marans and the one Austra White have begun laying again. I have never had any hens this old to lay eggs and I have been keeping chickens for over a half century.
Oh, forgot to mention that they are laying as well! Kelly my EE has never stopped laying.. but the other two haven’t laid in a very long time but started up a few months agoSo it seems that my “old ladies” aren’t all that old compared to some here
These three gals are from my original 8 that I got in March 2018… they are 6 years old! I have never lost a chicken to a predator until last September when a dog got in and killed 13 of my precious babies! These three were injured so severely but I was able to mend them back to health! Praise God! I lost their sister Claire along with the others… Here is Maryn, Kelly, and Rosemary….View attachment 3778058View attachment 3778060View attachment 3778061
I should probably stop calling them “the old ladies”![]()
