Have him pull off some of the feathers on the silkies if he is willing to. It should be easy to find out if it was an owl.

If you have or can get a small have a heart trap, use a piece of one of the birds he has reciently killed.
If you have already disposed of it, raw bloody meat is best.
Wire it to the pan so he has to work to get any.
They will keep coming back and are pretty easily caught this way.
