Who laid this wind egg?

Our flock comprises essentially two smaller flocks: four established laying hens (Black Australorp, SLW, Polish, and a Jersey Brown sex-link), and four 16-17 week old pullets (FBCM, Welsummer, and two Olive Eggers). The other day we found our first *ever* wind egg, from any hen, in the nest box.

L-to-R: Polish, Wyandotte, Australorp, Jersey

That looks to me like either the FBCM or the Welsummer pullet, right?

But the FBCM still has no red in her comb to speak of, AND I’ve never seen any of the pullets go into the coop yet (they sleep in the run, as we’re still slowly integrating). I haven’t noticed any squatting from the pullets either.

Could this actually be the welsummer? Or is it possible that the colouring from one of the laying hens, when applied over a much smaller shell, could come out that dark? The Jersey brown does have some speckling on her egg.

Based on pelvic pints and looking at the vent, it could be the welsummer. She’s got just about two of my (slender) fingers space, which would be enough to do the wind egg but not enough for a real egg. Definitely not the FBCM.

The mystery then is how and when she went in the nest box! I’ve never seen her go into the coop. That’s still the big girls’ territory. How’d she know to go in there?

I haven’t seen any other eggs from her, and I’ve been checking bushes haha.

Did you check the OEs?
Did you open wind egg and peel membrane back to see if white or blue shell?
