Who lays better......

Out of 5 laying pullets I got an avg. of 3 eggs during the winter. We lost one, and now out of the 4 we are consistently getting 4 eggs a day. I don't have any JG's to compare with, but I love my BA's and how well they lay and the nice size of the eggs.

Actually leghorns hold the record, but between the australorps and giants the consensus sems to be the aussies.

Interesting. I have read that, at least at one point, an Australorp hen held the record, having laid 364 eggs in 365 days. That's not intended as an argument (too lazy to research!) Just noting that both are excellent layers. My BA lays 6 or 7 days a week, and did not slow down in cold weather. Actually, same for my leghorns, for that matter, but I don't want any more leghorns. Too skittish.

I am really interested in how many eggs the Black Jersey Giants lay as well. I probably have one black australorp and one black jersey giant. I thought I had two australorps and realized they had different colored feet this morning. I had noticed it before but it never occurred to me that I might have gotten two different breeds. Then I did a search. Ugh oh!

I would love to here from folks how well both lay. Mine were hatchery chicks.

Correct. Leghorns are just more productive as a general rule. Only exceptionally bred Australorps can reach that number a year.

lol, my unexceptionally bred Aussies lay an egg a day. From my research (not experience) the JG lay more like 4 or 5 a week. BU then if they were hatchery Aussie's you may not have a JG but some type of Aussie cross . . . you never know maybe even Aussie JG? I would wait and see what they lay.
