Pretty hens.
My Lilith is lowest on the pecking order and constantly harrassed. One day she really wanted a certain box, but it was already occupied x 2!
Not to be deterred, Lilith climbed on the other two hens and laid her egg on another hen's back. I was so proud of her!

Yesterday was my first experience seeing them jockey for the favorite box. I only have two layers so far and they both wanted the nest box of choice at the same time. The other is right next to this one. The white Hyline waited and complained for awhile before she finally climbed in next to the Barred Rock. They sung a duet of the egg song when they finished.

This totally cracks me up! Maybe chicken hens are really communal nest layers and we are trying to make them singular nest layers.....

Years ago we had some banties and we had two hens that layed in the same nesting box and hatched out the eggs. They both mothered the chicks. I could never figure out who the true mother was or if they belonged to both of them. It was really quite comical. The were pretty progressive for the time I guess.
