Turkey vultures are scavengers, but black vultures will kill and take chickens away. If the vulture had white at the end of its wings - it was a black vulture. And they are so big they can carry off a full size chicken. I have my chickens area completely netted in, not only because of hawks but because I have a lot of black vultures. You may need to bring your pullet in and baby her for awhile and make her feel safe until you have your run protected from aerial predators and she has another friend.Thank you. I didn’t think so but I figured everything else would take it away
Agreed @TwoCrowsHello and welcome to BYC!
I am so sorry for your loss.Always heartbreaking to lose them.
Your remaining bird will be confused awhile. You will need to pay a but more attention to this one, spend more time with her, I wouldn't leave her alone in the coop long and definitely not free ranging alone. You might keep her as a house chicken for now, in your mud room, laundry area, garage? She is pretty young and you don't want to traumatize her. Hopefully you can find some friends that are similar in age for her soon.
Agreed @sourlandWelcome to BYC. I would recommend two birds around the same age as your pullet.
I feel terrible because I let them roam with me when I do outside activities and I left to load my rock tumbler. I regret not even thinking a bigger bird would get them so quick..Turkey vultures are scavengers, but black vultures will kill and take chickens away. Great. Sounds like you are doing the right things. We are here for you.I feel terrible because I let them roam with me when I do outside activities and I left to load my rock tumbler. I regret not even thinking a bigger bird would get them so quick..Then I came out and the vulture took off, definitely looked brown but don’t recall the tail feathers. And I got my sunroom cleaned out today and she’s moving in tomorrow. Currently on the hunt for more pullets her age. I really appreciate all the information this community has given me!
