Funny, we got a new rooster (over a year old), and had him for several days when I finally mentioned to DH that maybe he didn't want to crow until he'd gotten more settled into his new surroundings, because I hadn't heard anything at all out of him. This was rather dissappointing to me. Later in the day, DH and I were in the garden, 20 yards from the coop, and DH says- so, you still haven't heard the rooster crow? I tell him no, with a sigh. He says, 'really?- he's crowing right now!'
DUH!
He sure was, and I wasn't hearing it at all- just part of the country background noises, I suppose. Now, I specifically listen for him- otherwise, I don't notice.

And I do love the sound.

I can't believe someone would get on here and condone and even admit she may have done it herself, killing baby animals because my chickens bother someone. WOW!

And by the way, I did not build a coop at the furthest point from my house, the coop is a converted shed that has been there since 1965, it would fall apart if I tried to move it, I did not intentionally put a coop there. Besides, coop or no coop, roosters walk around and crow all over the yard, they rarely crow in the coop.

Oh and to answer the question about the rooster bothering me, not in the least, he walks right near my bedroom crowing in the morning and I love it

If you're gonna live outside of the city, you should expect to hear 'outside-of -the-city sounds (read: cows moo-ing, roosters crowing, coyotes howling, wild birds singing (heaven forbid!!!), goats..doing whatever goats do, ducks quacking..etc, etc, etc.) If you're not careful, you might even have to suffer through the sounds of kids playing!! Absolutely!! I would rather hear a rooster all day than sirens wailing, trucks roaring, and car horns.

What truely amazes me is the people that want to move out to the country to enjoy fresh air and surroundings. They build their new house next to a dairy farm and complain about the smell. We have some new housing in our area and they are trying to past zoning laws to out law horses, cows and even chickens. Fortunately there are more farmers in our area than yuppies wanting to get out of the city and brag they live in the country. I have an 18 acre farm and if i want to have whatever on it it's my business not the neighbor with a 1/2 acre that complains my horses neighing, and galloping in the pasture is too loud. They know i have chickens but my lil 6 week old roo hasn't crowed yet. I'm sure that will really tick them off.

I predict that she will move since she is renting. keeping her landlord apprised of her actions, in writing, may help get her out sooner. If she is disagreeable with you she is probably disagreeable with other people as well, possibly including the landlord, and if you befriend the landlord the next tenant will know upfront that there are roosters in the neighborhood and rent elsewhere if that is a problem.

You hang in there country folks need to stick together. You live in the country you expect to be around a farming community. I agree with the dislike of city sounds. I pray I never have to live in the city again. It is noisey out here in the country but it is the " nature-noise" that I am addicted to.

On further thinking about this whole situation...the ideal thing would be to purchase that house and turn that house into a great coup!
