Who washes their eggs before incubating?

I try to wash them all but Im lazy so this weeks they didn't all get washed..

I soak them in very hot soapy water for about 2 minutes then rinse them under running hot water.

About 2 months ago I was setting some leghornx eggs for layers, and the girls got poo and mud all over the eggs, so I washed them off and dipped them into a bleach solution and they hatched. No problems from it.

All of my eggs whether for the table or the incubator are washed under running water at least 20 degrees warmer than the eggs, but not so hot as to be uncomfortable to put your hands in. They then go into a basket to drain.

For hatching eggs once clean I put an ounce (two tablespoons) of plain laundry bleach into a gallon of water at a similar temperature then soak the eggs in it for one measured minute. When the time is up I pull the basket and let the eggs drain then they go into the incubator trays without drying.

This doesn't improve my hatch rate, but it does minimize introducing microbial contaminants into my incubator which like warmth and humidity as much as my developing eggs. Especially if the incubator is going to be running for several months non-stop like mine does when I'm doing staggered hatches. No nastiness growing inside which would be difficult to clean and eliminate.

We sanitize the eggs and turner racks with Tek-Trol. Good stuff - the active ingredient (phenol) is also the active ingredient in Chloraseptic mouth spray. With 1:256 dilution, a little goes a LONG way.

The way that they come out of momma is the way that they go to the incubator. dirt, poo, and all.
