Whole Corn in Scratch Corn... Question

When I was younger my uncle had chickens and in the winter they feed them whole corn with no problems. While I feed mine cracked corn, it certainly would not kill them to eat whole corn.

As for choking hazards chickens basically have separate "tubes" for eating and breathing so they are not prone to choking like we are.

I bought scratch for the first time a few weeks ago. It has a mix of seeds, and a lot of cracked corn, but a lot of whole kernels too.

It's usually the part they fight to get to first. I figure as tough as chicken gizzards are, it should get ground up.

They've been very fine so far.

Oh, and today, I fed them corn on the cob for the first time. Well ... I've given cooked on cob before, but this was fresh with husk, silk and all. I peeled back the husk and called my "chick chick" treat call.

They were terrified of it, LOL. I had to break a piece off, and start feeding kernels, before they got brave enough to take it on for themselves, then it was a free-for-all to see who could snatch the most corn off the cob, LOL. Flying wet corn-bits everywhere.

Silly chickens.

Arent' they funny!
I threw in a bucket load of leaves from under the apple tree, and my girls were terrified! I eventually threw some scratch on top and they were good to go.

I've given mine cooked corn on the cob - or more to the truth, the leftovers from the kids... they LOVED it!

well I threw mine a whole ear of corn, they loved it, spent all day cleaning it.

I dumped the compiost bin last week, put a dog pen around it and lock the girls in for afew hours, they adore trashing through the veggie compost.
