ive been trying to decide on breeds of chicks to order. im stuck for my brown egg layers, i love RIR's but everyone seems to have and breed them so i'd like to go a little different route. i know for popularity and production they are great for big brown eggs, but im curious about the delawares. i read they have a high production also, of large brown eggs. so what is your opinion?
i also considered Speckled sussex too, but was told thier eggs are much lighter than say a RIR's. I'd like the nice medium brown color.

I love my Delaware eggs. They are a different shade of brown, more a peachy-pinkish tan color. And they are rounder than most RIR eggs. Both are great breeds and lay very well. My Speckled Sussex laid an almost white egg, quite small, actually.

In the first pic, the second egg from the left is a Delaware egg, my darkest layer and the second pic are all Del pullet eggs:

My speckled sussex and new hampshire red lay the same color eggs, although the NHR's are large eggs, and the SS medium.

My chickens haven't been laying for a real long time, but my RIR's actually lay an egg that is quite light (relatively speaking). The Delaware lays a slightly darker egg and the Gold Comet lays the darkest egg. I'll add pictures if I think about it later when I'm at home.

I've got 14 Delawares. speckledhen is about right on the color. But if you're looking for nice birds, I love Dellies! I've only been doing chickens for 2 1/2 years, but of the 6 or 7 breeds I've tried, I like Delawares the best! Sweet disposition, and very nice egg layers. We ordered and received 50 more this year!

Good

BTW, I'm jealous of the green grass in the pics here!
